2016 RACE ACROSS THE NULLARBOR
Story
This year, the 3rd annual Porsche Muster, the longest classic Porsche fundraising drive in the world, would like to invite you to join in the adventure and help us raise critically needed funds for Australian cancer research. It is a race driven by passion and powered by cars making a positive contribution to the lives of people affected by cancer. It is an event handcrafted by love.
“Its really what we call a transcontinental endurance ‘Fundrace’” explains Chris Molloy, the founder of the initiative. “The idea of the race is that a fundraising blue team, using a small, blue model of a 911 as a mascot, aims to hit a donation target based on $1 per kilometre, before our car and driver team complete the physical distance in a 26 year old black 911.” This year the distance is 6000klm, meaning the fundraising target is $6000. The black team are aiming to make the drive across Australia from West to East in just under 7 days.
“Just about everyone we know has some experience in their lives with this disease. Our reason for choosing this charity is we believe the secret to a cure is to support research. Cure Cancer Australia are the oldest foundation of their kind in Australia and their funding has had many successful outcomes for a wide range of cancers.”
“The reason for choosing Porsche goes all the way back to my earliest childhood memories and experiences. In 1961 my father traded in his VW Beetle for a grey Porsche 356B. A year later I arrived on the planet and for the next 5 years, I was the sole occupant of the backseat of that brilliant little sports car. The sound, the smell, the look of these cars still has a deep emotional gravity for me.”
This year’s race plan is based on shipping the black car to Perth for the start. We will be flying to Perth on Saturday the 10th September and will be driving from Perth on the 11th starting at 10.30am.
This year we will be running fund raising events and drives in each state with local Porsche Club members and enthusiasts in WA, SA, VIC, ACT and NSW.
Our start in Perth is being conducted in conjunction with a Cars and Coffee event http://porscheclubofwesternaustralia.wildapricot.org/event-2309991 arranged by Porsche Club Western Australia and friends from Ferrari, Aston martin and Jaguar to name a few. We will head towards the Nullarbor after coffee, with an entourage of a few dozen Porsches joining us for the first hour and lunch at a secret location before we head off alone to cross the continent. http://porscheclubofwesternaustralia.wildapricot.org/event-2318552
On route we will be undertaking a number of fundraising challenges including daily auctions, fundraiser devised challenges and the longest golf tournament in the world, the 18 hole, 1365klm, Nullarbor links.
The Porsche Clubs in South Australia, Victoria, ACT and NSW are all arranging gatherings in each state as we make our way towards the finish. The finish for this years’ race will be under Sydney Harbour Bridge on September 18th. We will then make our way to Fagan Park for the annual PCNSW Concours d’Elegance . http://pcnsw.onefireplace.com/event-2220983
There is a race epilogue drive that will depart after the Concourse and travel via the Putty Road to Newcastle for anyone who feels like a few more captivating k’s to round out the week and cap out the total race distance at over 6000klm.
Over the past 2 years The Porsche Muster annual Race to Stop Cancer has driven almost 15000klm in 15 days and has raised over $10,000 for Australian Cancer Research with their official charity partner Cure Cancer Australia.
We sincerely hope that you can join us on this amazing adventure this year.
